A Wonderful Family-Run Knife Store in the Heart of Solvang, CA
If you want something these days, you just… search for it online and buy it. Right? A few clicks, a day or two of waiting, package on the doorstep—done.
But how often do you finally get the thing, only to find out it’s not right? Wrong size, wrong color, wrong quality. Now you’re stuck filing a return, repackaging it, driving it to the post office. And the whole time, every person you interact with acts like you’re the problem.
That’s the world we live in now. Online retail is the norm. It was heading that way before COVID, and the pandemic accelerated things.
Small businesses—especially mom and pops—have taken the biggest hit.
Which is why finding a place like Solvang Knives feels like stepping into a different time
. A better one
A store with heart—and people who actually know your name
Located in the beautiful little Danish-inspired village of Solvang CA, is Solvang knives. It’s a small store that feels cozy and welcoming. Oak curios filled to the brim with beautiful knives made by some of the best names in EDC. Funny little signs, artisan goods, and useful trinkets all around. There’s a warning sign as you enter the store “WARNING: THIS STORE CAN BE ADDICTIVE”. It’s true.
While I was browsing one of the display cases, the mailman walked up the stairs and into the doorway:
“Knock knock! Good morning!” he said, arms full of packages.
Diane—one of the owners—greeted him by name.
“How was the pie I sent over?” she asked.
“Fantastic,” he said. “I devoured it.”
He set the boxes down and started wandering the shop just like I was making small talk with Diane. He stopped in front of the Anza Knives case. I stood next to him.
“Man, these are cool! I’ve had a few over the years. I love them. I want this one. Which do you like?”
It made me smile.
A friendly guy, in a friendly store, in a friendly town…
Moments like that remind you what a community feels like. What it’s like when people are genuinely good to each other. It was nice.
From a “guy store” to a curated knife shop built for customer need
Solvang Knives was founded by husband-and-wife team Jim and Dianne back in 2015.
“At first, we weren’t even really a knife store,” Dianne told me. “We were more of a ‘guy store’—anything men’s interest related.”
But men kept coming in asking for knives.
So they brought in knives.
Quality ones.
And before long, the knives became the heart of the shop.
What They Sell: A Deep, Well-Stocked Selection
Solvang Knives has one of the most diverse and well-rounded selections I’ve seen in a brick-and-mortar shop. Brands include:
- Benchmade
- Kershaw
- Silver Stag
- Shun
- White River Knife & Tool
- Anza Knives
- Santa Fe Stoneworks
- William Henry
- Spyderco
- Buck
- Swiss Army
- And a bunch more…
And here’s the cool part: Diane keeps a wide inventory—often with items that are unavailable online.
If you’ve ever chased a discontinued or backordered knife, you know how rare that is.
It’s one of the last real advantages of walking into a physical knife shop: sometimes the treasure you’re hunting for is sitting right there in the case, or on a shelf in the back.
Services You Don’t Get From Big Box Retail
Solvang Knives does more than simply sell knives—they also help you take care of them.
They offer:
- Laser engraving
- Professional knife sharpening
Work Sharp products and replacement parts (so you can maintain your own blades at home)
The Store Is Stocked With YOU In Mind
Solvang Knives is curated with customers in mind. You can tell immediately.
At the front of the store, there’s a small rack of neckties.
“With Solvang being such a wedding destination, we have guys come in saying they forgot theirs,” Dianne said. “So we brought some in to make sure they’re covered.”
How thoughtful!
I also noticed a wall display of inexpensive Kai kitchen knives. I recognized them from my trip to Japan. They’re nice quality knives for a low price.
“We get a lot of Airbnb guests who complain the knives in the kitchens are dull,” she said. “So we wanted something good for them that isn’t super expensive.”
Solvang Knives pays attention to what their customers need and want. They do what they can to fill those needs.
A shop with personality—and owners who actually use what they sell
Dianne told me she is driven by her love of the store and the people who walk through the door. She uses the products. She knows them. She carries a knife every day as part of her own EDC—and even matches her carry to her outfit (which is cool. I should start doing that).
When I was there, she was opening packages with a Benchmade Bailout® in Carbon Fiber with an M390 blade. A beautiful (and expensive haha) choice.
Give Solvang Knives a Visit
When you walk into Solvang Knives, you’re walking into a family-run store where the owners actually care about what they sell—and care even more about the people they sell it to. They do have a website, but the heart of the store is within the people that run it. I cannot express enough how much fun it is to stop in, chat, and find something special.
On my recent visit, I picked up a Benchmade Osborne with denim micarta scales and m390 blade. I missed this release online somehow! I had wanted a mini osborne for a while (or so I thought) but after seeing it in person I realized I wanted the full size model. I knew I had to have it. Especially being such a denim head. The sticker price was even less than the benchmade’s website and SMKW too! They really do have fair and competitive pricing.
If you’re ever in town, please stop in. get yourself a knife and a few Aebleskivers.
They are located at: 442 1st St, Solvang, CA 93463.

Trust me—it’s worth the visit.
